How Hot are Conducting Molecular Junctions?

چکیده
molecules is one of the ultimate goals of nanotechnology. While the prospect of applications based on such devices still remains to be seen, they already can be used as wonderful tools to explore fundamental processes, that are also of highest technological importance, at the molecular level. One of these processes is heat generation and dissipation at the nanoscale. Previous experiments have tried to indirectly determine the effective temperature of nanoscale junctions under bias by measuring attributes such as the breaking rate or the force required to break various junctions, which are temperature dependent. Yet, the best method to directly determine the effective temperature of junctions under potential bias is to monitor the (non-equilibrium) occupancy of their vibrational levels. Recently in collaboration with the group of Prof. Ori Cheshnovsky we have demonstrated such a capability in a paper published in Nature Nanotechnology1. Using a

Length-dependent thermopower of highly conducting Au-C bonded single molecule junctions.
We report the simultaneous measurement of conductance and thermopower of highly conducting single-molecule junctions using a scanning tunneling microscope-based break-junction setup. We start with molecular backbones (alkanes and oligophenyls) terminated with trimethyltin end groups that cleave off in situ to create junctions where terminal carbons are covalently bonded to the Au electrodes. We...

In a typical solitonic distribution, the soliton density is distributed over the entire moleculeand the present work shows how its density can be decomposed into solitonic and antisolitoniccomponents. It is found that there exists a unique electron as soliton over the anionicnanoconductor, while there are many other solitons and antisolitons. The solitonic states are furtherdecomposed to the ca...
متن کاملTricellular junctions: how to build junctions at the TRICkiest points of epithelial cells
Tricellular contacts are the places where three cells meet. In vertebrate epithelial cells, specialized structures called tricellular tight junctions (tTJs) and tricellular adherens junctions (tAJs) have been identified. tTJs are important for the maintenance of barrier function, and disruption of tTJ proteins contributes to familial deafness. tAJs have recently been attracting the attention of...

متن کاملConjugated thiol linker for enhanced electrical conduction of gold-molecule contacts.
Single-molecule electrical conduction studies are used to evaluate how the molecular linking unit influences the tunneling efficiency in metal-molecule-metal (m-M-m) junctions. This work uses conducting-probe atomic force microscopy (CP-AFM) to compare the molecular conduction of two pi-bonded molecules: one with a single thiol linker, and another with a conjugated double thiol linker at both e...
